Elizabeth (Alex) Schlesener, PhD
Human-AI Integration & Embodied AI Researcher | Virtual Humans Expert | Ph.D. in HCC ('25) | MFA in DPA ('21)
Hello! My name is Elizabeth, but I go by Alex. I am an HCI researcher specializing in Human–AI Integration and Embodied AI.
I recently earned my Ph.D. in Human-Centered Computing from Clemson University, where I led led 10+ applied research projects funded by the BMW Group, the U.S. National Science Foundation, Prisma Health, and Adobe, and published peer-reviewed work in premier venues including ACM CHI, IEEE VR, JMIR, and ACM TiiS.
In May 2021, I earned an MFA in Digital Production Arts from Clemson University, and I am highly proficient in industry-standard tools such as Unreal Engine, Unity, Maya, and more. I also have technical expertise in Python, C#/C++, JavaScript, HTML, and R/SPSS.
My research approach is predominantly mixed methods, combining quantitative and qualitative analyses to evaluate user-facing systems that support meaningful human–AI interaction and collaboration. In doing so, my work focuses on leveraging anthropomorphic and interaction design properties that promote symbiotic Human–AI partnerships, allowing both humans and AI systems to bring out the best in each other.
Areas of focus: Human–AI Collaboration · Embodied AI · Virtual Humans · VR/AR/XR Research
I am open to roles in human-centered AI, human–AI collaboration, embodied AI, and UX research, particularly those focused on building AI assistants designed for rich, collaborative interactions.
